At Canterbury Cross we believe that early childhood represents a crucial stage of life in terms of children’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social development and of their well being. The Foundation Stage covers the years your child spends from the beginning of Nursery to the end of Reception.

We use the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage to help us plan learning opportunities. The curriculum for the Foundation Stage underpins all future learning by supporting, fostering, promoting and developing children’s knowledge skills and understanding in six areas of learning. We believe that play both indoors and outdoors is a key way in which young children learn.

PERSONAL, SOCIAL and EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Your child will learn to be self confident, take an interest in things, know what their own needs are, tell the difference between right and wrong and form relationships with other adults and children.

MATHEMATICAL DEVELOPMENT

Your child will develop and understanding of maths through stories, songs, games and imaginative play. They will learn about numbers and counting and ideas such as ‘bigger’ or ‘heavier than’. They will learn the names of 2D and 3D shapes.

COMMUNICATION LANGUAGE and LITERACY

Your child will learn to talk confidently and clearly, enjoying stories, songs and poems, hearing and saying sounds, and linking them to the alphabet. They will begin to learn to read and write.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD

Your child will explore and find out about the world around them, asking questions about it. They will build with different material, and learn about everyday technology and what it is used for. They will learn about past events in their lives and in their families’ lives. They will learn about different cultures and beliefs.

CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT

Your child will explore colours and shapes, try out dance, make things, tell stories and make music.

PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

Your child will learn to move confidently, controlling their body and handing equipment.
