Welcome to Year 6

Welcome to Year 6, we have two classes which are 6Z and 6Q. Our PE day is Friday, children should come to school in PE kit on those days. Homework and reading records will be collected on Mondays, and homework is handed out on Thursdays.

In RE, we finally answered the burning question we all had: what do chocolate eggs have to do with Easter? In studying the Holy Week in the build-up to Jesus' resurrection, we explored what all the different symbols of Easter represent, from palm crosses to bunnies and everything in-between.

We were excited this week to start our brand new History topic - Birmingham and the Industrial Revolution! Exploring what we're famous for, learning about our own city's historical events and plotting them onto a timeline was great fun and we look forward to diving more into our own impact on the country!

As part of World Book Day, Year 6 created story books from scratch! They brainstormed, planned, wrote, and create beautiful illustrations for their class stories. Every child worked incredibly hard to bring their ideas to life. Well done, Year 6.

To continue our study of South Wales, we explored how to use detailed OS maps by understanding routes and symbols. We were able to locate the tallest peaks in the Brecon Beacons National Park as well as plot the course from Cardiff all the way to Pen-y-fan!

In Science, we explored the concept of refraction. Refraction is the bending of light and occurs when light travels from one medium to another. In this lesson, we investigated the effects of refraction by exploring how light affects the direction of the arrows when passing through glass and water. Have a look at what we discovered!

Year 6 have started a new Geography topic which  focuses on the geographical features of South Wales. This week, children were given the opportunity to analyse, plot and compare data between Birmingham and Cardiff.

Our children have been working incredibly hard to design and make a pencil case. They have used a variety of tools and equipment to create their final product. Well done!

Today, we tested our problem-solving skills through a variety of maths puzzles and games. We had to use our maths knowledge, both co-operatively and competitively, to solve many challenges!

This week in guided understanding, we saw fantastic performances of poetry! The children performed with fantastic expression, changing the tone and volume of their voices to suit the mood. Well done to all!

This week in Year 6, we worked hard learning lines for, rehearsing and performing a class assembly on Diwali! We focused on the different aspects of the day and how families celebrate. The children performed their lines, dances and songs brilliantly. Well done!

This week in Science we have been exploring the circulatory system! To help see it in action, we all acted as blood cells travelling around the hall. Some of us acted as oxygenated blood travelling from the lungs, and some of us acted as deoxygenated blood travelling back towards the heart through a variety of blood vessels!

This week, children have been delving deeper into Black history as part of Black History Month. They have explored the achievements and inspirational stories of many influential people throughout history, who have fought for their freedom and right to change.

For history this week in Year 6, we studied the struggle that Saxon monks had to live through when Vikings first raided England in 793 AD. We wrote newspaper reports spreading the word of an attack on Lindisfarne, warning others about the inevitable threat of further Viking raids!

After getting used to our new surroundings in Year 6, we took part in some team-building activities in order to demonstrate our co-operative skills. One challenge required building skyscrapers out of just two pieces of paper! With great strategy and communication, we were able to surprise ourselves!

To introduce our new topic in Art, we researched famous artists known for their works in landscape and cityscape art. From watercolour paintings to effective use of oil pastels, we explored how artists such as L.S. Lowry and Georgia O'Keeffe reflected their own landscapes and cityscapes in such a variety of ways!

As part of Science Week, Year 6 took part in an investigation. They investigated the extinction of dinosaurs, and throughout the week they gathered and presented data related to a number of theories. Every child worked incredibly hard and showed a great amount of enthusiasm when researching this topic.

This week, Year 6 created shadow puppets as part of their Light topic Science. It was lovely to see many children create puppets inspired by Keith Harring work, who we explored in Art last term.

To contrast the realistic art we have been working on lately, we looked at an abstract way of drawing figures. By exploring the work of the artist Keith Haring, we understood why his influential drawings and sculptures captured the imagination of many around the world. We can't wait to begin to replicate his style!

We have recently been sharpening our skills in hockey and tennis during PE. The children have shown a great ability in dribbling, passing and shooting in hockey whist also displaying great control, co-ordination and a range of movements in tennis. We can't wait to apply these skills to matches soon!

During Spanish, Year 6 used Spanish dictionaries to help them translate a text. They were able to identify unfamiliar words and learned that some Spanish words have more than one meaning.

This week in PE we applied our passing, dribbling, shooting and defending skills in games of basketball. The children delivered in their opportunity to showcase some brilliant understanding of positioning in invasion games.

This week, Year 6 took part in a workshop where they painted diva lamps as part of next weeks Diwali celebrations. The children had a wonderful time painting, decorating and learning about the significance of diva lamps.

This week was 6Z's assembly on Black and Asian history. The class worked incredibly hard over the last week, practising and perfecting their lines. They did an exceptional job of highlighting the significant achievements from various black and Asian people. Well done to 6Z!

In Art, we practised a variety of hatching techniques that can be used to create tone when sketching. We had a fantastic time applying these techniques when sketching the other halves of our favourite animals!

For the first science lesson of our new topic 'Animals Including Humans', we familiarised ourselves with the technical vocabulary by playing a game of 'Flip It!' After having the function read out to us, we had lots of fun guessing the parts of the body!
